In my opinion, mecha anime have gotten a lot better over the years. If you're talking about popularity instead of quality, I really can't comment on that.

I haven't yet watched far enough to see if there's a great plotline, but it doesn't seem much like a joke.

Perhaps it was a refreshing change. And if you're going to bother saying "roboto", you should have probably said "aimu sikku abu dura roboto, ai wanto dura rituru garu".
That said, I've been meaning to keep up with this show, but I haven't been able to for various unrelated reasons, and so if it got worse after the latest episode I saw(three or four?), disregard everything I said.
